    Why do you think the tributes have to stand on their metal plates for sixty seconds before starting?

    The sixty seconds of apprehension and fear just before the plunge into madness probably builds suspense for both the tributes and the people watching.

    I think that the tributes have to stand on plates, not only to build suspense, and cause a sense of paranoia in many of the tributes, but also so that the tributes can get a sense of where things are in the arena and give them a chance to formulate a strategy.
